The Blue Devils open at home, under the lights, for the second time in three seasons Saturday. CCSU started the 2021 season by hosting Southern Connecticut, before opening the year at UConn in 2022. CCSU last won a season opener in 2019, when it traveled to the Bronx, NY and defeated Fordham 26-23. The Blue Devils were 1-1 in season openers when Coach Lechtenberg was on staff, losing 33-3 at New Hampshire in 2012 and defeating SCSU 35-21 in 2011. Of the six NEC Championship seasons, CCSU has won a season opener on four occasions.
Lechtenberg was named the 15th head coach in the history of the CCSU football program on January 10, 2023. He returned to New Britain where he spent two seasons (2010 and 2011) as the co-offensive coordinator, helping the Blue Devils to the 2010 NEC Championship.
