Baseball Wins Game One, Game Two Suspended
Teams will finish the weekend series on Sunday at 12 p.m.
The Central Connecticut baseball team won game one of a Saturday doubleheader 6-0 vs. LIU Brooklyn, but game two was suspended due to weather in the top of the second inning. The game will be finished on Sunday beginning at 12 noon. Following that game, the fourth and final game of the series will be played.
With the game one win the Blue Devils are now 21-18 overall and 10-8 in Northeast Conference play. LIU is now 24-21-1 overall and 11-11 in the NEC.
Central took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with a pair of two out unearned runs. Junior Dominic Severino singled to lead off the inning and scored on a two out error. With a man on second junior Bryan Rivera singled in the second run of the inning.
Central added three unearned runs in the fourth inning to build the lead to 5-0. An RBI double from Rivera, followed by a sacrifice fly from senior J.P. Sportman and an RBI infield single from freshman Franklin Jennings pushed the lead to five.
Freshman Pat Sirois drove in a run in the fifth inning to make it 6-0. Senior Josh Ingham had singled to lead off the inning and he scored on the play.
Senior Tom Coughlin picked up his fourth win of the season pitching the complete game in the game one win. The shutout was his third of the season. He scattered five hits and didn't walk a batter while striking out three. He retired 11 of the final 12 batters in the game and after the first inning allowed only three base runners.
In game two Severino put the Blue Devils up 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning on his first home run of the season. The three-run shot came with two outs as the Blue Devils strung together three straight two out hits.
The weather delay came with one out in the top of the second inning with the Blue Devils leading 3-0. The game will be picked up at that exact point on Sunday at 12 noon.
Following the continuation of the delayed game, the fourth and final game will be played in New Britain.
