Baseball Splits With Mount on Saturday
Blue Devils and Mount will finish the weekend series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Central Connecticut baseball team split a doubleheader at home with Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, winning game one 3-1, before dropping game two 5-2. With the split the Blue Devils are now 9-8 overall on the season and 2-1 in Northeast Conference play.
In game one the Mount got on the board first with a single run in the top of the first inning. Korey Britton singled to drive in the first run of the game.
Central took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning with a pair of two out runs. Seniors J.P. Sportman and Josh Ingham each drove in a run with two outs to give Central their first lead of the afternoon.
Freshman Matt Blandino singled in a run in the sixth inning to push the lead to 3-1.
Senior Nick Neumann picked up his first win of the season pitching six innings and allowing just one earned run. Ingham picked up his fourth save pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Neumann struck out three and after allowing a first inning run he faced more than three batters in an inning just twice.
In game two the Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Sportman scored on an RBI single from junior Dominic Severino to give Central the one-run edge.
The Mount tied the game 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning. With a man on second and two outs Ryan Owens singled in the first run of the game for the visitors.
Central took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. With one out and a man on third, freshman Franklin Jennings singled up the middle for his second RBI on the season and the one run lead.
The Mount took a 5-2 lead with four runs in the top of the fifth inning.
Junior Jesse Frawley pitched four innings allowing five hits and one earned while striking out one. He did not factor in the decision. Freshman Kevin Connolly pitched the final 2.2 innings without allowing a run or a hit.
Sportman finished the day 6-for-8 with a pair of runs scored an an RBI. Ingham was 5-of-7 with a run scored and an RBI. Severino was 3-of-4 with an RBI in game two, while senior Anthony Turgeon finished the day 4-of-7 with a pair of runs scored.
