Baseball Drops Series Opener to LIU 4-2
Blue Devils and Blackbirds will play two on Saturday
The Central Connecticut baseball team dropped the opening game of a Northeast Conference home series to LIU Brooklyn 4-2 on Friday afternoon in New Britain. With the loss Central is now 20-18 overall and 9-8 in NEC play. The Blackbirds are 24-20-1 overall and 11-10 in league action.
The Blackbirds took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Central starting pitcher Dominic Severino walked in a run.
The lead stretched to 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning with a two out RBI triple off the bat of Kevin Needham. With two outs Bobby Webb walked and then scored on the triple. The walk was the fourth of the game for Severino.
The Blue Devils cut the lead in half on an RBI double from freshman Pat Sirois in the bottom of the seventh inning. Severino singled and went to second on a wild pitch with two outs. He scored on the double.
LIU took a 4-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning. The first run scored on a wild pitch and the second on an RBI single from Mark Hernandez.
Severino drove in a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to make it 4-2. Senior Josh Ingham singled with two outs and then scored on the play.
Severino falls to 3-4 on the season with the loss. He went eight innings allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out six Blackbird batters.
The two teams will continue the weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
