Volleyball Recognized For Academic Excellence
Blue Devils have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for 10 straight years.
The Central Connecticut volleyball program was recognized for its excellence in the classroom in 2015-16 with the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award. This year the AVCA recognized an all-time high 764 teams, surpassing last year's mark of 756 programs. A total of 132 Division I programs were honored this season.
The award was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year and honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that maintained at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
"Congratulations to the coaches and institutions that won the 2016 AVCA Team Academic Award," said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer. "It is no accident that a volleyball coaches association recognizes academic excellence as a team, rather than an individual, achievement. Players influence each other, both in execution on the court and discipline in the classroom."
The academic honor is the latest in a list of awards from the 2015-16 season. The squad posted a cumulative GPA over 3.5 and had 11 members of the squad honored on the Northeast Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll. The Blue Devils were also recognized with the Northeast Conference Sportsmanship Award. Among the individual accolades were recently graduated senior Makenna Lommori being named a finalist for the Northeast Conference Student-Athlete of the Year, while Nicole Dean was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 1 First Team as a junior.
Central opens the 2016 season by hosting the CCSU Invitational on August 26-27.
