Volleyball Tops Iona 3-1 in 2016 Season Opener
Freshman Morgan Woycik leads attack on offense with 12 kills
Freshman hitter Morgan Woycik led all Central Connecticut players with 12 kills as the Blue Devils opened their 2016 season with a 3-1 win over Iona on Friday night in the CCSU Invitational. The Blue Devils won the first set 25-20, but the Gaels rebounded to win set two 25-23. Central answered, however, winning the third set 25-13 and the fourth 25-20 to begin the season with a 1-0 record.

Woycik's 12 kills led the Blue Devils, but she was one of five with at least six kills in the match. Classmate Gala Galabova added nine kills without making an error in 18 total attempts. Senior Cassidy Stankowski had eight kills and added a team-high 15 kills on defense.
A pair of Blue Devils combined to produce 44 assists in the match. Sophomore Kaitlyn Kushman had 26 assists while freshman Erin McDermott added 18 in her first career match for Central. The Blue Devils had 49 assists on 50 kills in the match. Senior Rachel Fish had 14 digs.
Sophomore Raquel Quirarte added seven kills while senior Brooke Schwab had six kills to go along with four blocks. Woycik added five block assists while junior Maddie Smith had one block solo and five block assists. Central had 10 team blocks in the win. Smith added three service aces and a pair of kills.
Central will play twice on Saturday, facing Lehigh at 1:30 p.m. and Fordham at 4 p.m. The second day of competition begins with Iona and Fordham playing at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
