Volleyball Falls to LIU Brooklyn, 3-2, on Senior Day
Central honored its graduating class prior to Sunday's match.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team fell to LIU Brooklyn, 3-2, on Sunday at Detrick Gymnasium in Northeast Conference action. The Blue Devils honored their graduating class of seniors Nicole Dean, Rachel Fish, Erika Jones, Brooke Schwab and Cassidy Stankowski and junior Emma Schissel prior to the match.
CCSU slips to 13-11 overall and 8-4 in the NEC, while LIU Brooklyn improves to 11-14 overall and 8-4 in the NEC.
Freshman Morgan Woycik led CCSU with 18 kills, while Stankowski and sophomore Raquel Quirarte added 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Stankowski added 14 digs for the double-double. Sophomore Kaitlyn Kushman had 34 assists and 14 digs. Freshman Erin McDermott had 14 digs. Fish had 16 digs, while junior Lindsey Massicotte added 10 digs. Junior Maddie Smith had a team-high seven total blocks.
The Blue Devils trailed, 20-13, in the opening set, before battling back with an 8-1 run to tie the set at 21-21 on a kill by Stankowski. Central finished the frame out with three straight points, including back-to-back kills by Schwab to take the set, 25-22.
In the second set, McDermott served five straight points to help CCSU go ahead 10-3. The Blue Devils would lead throughout the set and and kill by Woycik finished the set, 25-17, to give CCSU a 2-0 lead in the match.
LIU would even the match, taking the third set, 25-19, and the fourth set, 25-17, to sent it to a fifth set.
The Blackbirds built a 10-4 lead in the fifth set, enroute to taking the set, 15-8, to win the match.
Jiayi Zhang led LIU with 20 kills and five blocks, while Amanda Hubbard had 50 assists. Emily Magee had 25 digs for the Blackbirds.
CCSU is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Fairleigh Dickinson at 1:00 p.m.
