The Central Connecticut volleyball team fell to Bryant, 3-0 (20-25, 20-25, 22-25), on Saturday in Smithfield, RI. Senior Makenna Lommori had a team-high 16 kills to go with nine assists and eight digs.
The Blue Devils fall to 10-8 on the year and 2-3 in Northeast Conference play. The Bulldogs improved to 12-10 overall and 4-1 in NEC play.
The Bulldogs scored the first five points of the opening set and led throughout. CCSU scored three in a row to get within 17-12, but Bryant responded with a 5-1 run to pull away in the opening set.
Central opened the second set by taking a 5-3 lead after a pair of kills by Lommori and another by senior Heather Trueman. The Bulldogs broke a 10-10 tie after consecutive kills by Kristin Kingi and then used a run of six unanswered points to go ahead 18-12 and take control of the set.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a quick lead in the third set thanks in part to three kills by Lommori, which made it 4-1. Bryant came back with four straight points of its own and the teams went back and forth the remainder of the set. A 5-1 spurt by the Bulldogs late in the set put them ahead 24-20 before kills by Lommori and junior Erika Jones made it 24-22 before a kill by Sophie Hoekstra closed out the match.
Senior Ashley Lenington led the Blue Devils with 18 assists. Junior Cassidy Stankowski finished with 16 digs to lead CCSU.
Hoekstra led Bryant with 10 kills. Vika Nesterov had 37 assists and Debora Magalhaes had a team-high 16 digs.
