Lommori, Quirarte Earn Weekly Northeast Conference Volleyball Honors
Duo helped the Blue Devils open the season 3-0.
Senior Makenna Lommori and freshman Raquel Quirarte earned Northeast Conference weekly award recognition after helping Central Connecticut go 3-0 at the season-opening Blue Devil Classic last weekend it was announced on Tuesday. Lommori was named Molten/Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week, while Quirarte earned Rookie of the Week honors.
Lommori was named MVP of the Blue Devil Classic and also claimed a spot on the All-Tournament Team after helping lead CCSU to the tournament title. She recorded 109 total assists (10.9/set), added 32 digs (3.2/set), 16 kills (1.6/set) and 10 block assists (1.0/set) in the three victories.
Lommori opened the tournament with 37 assists, nine kills and seven digs against Fairfield. She helped the Blue Devils hit .290 as a team. On Saturday, the setter posted a season-high 46 assists as Central had 58 kills in a 3-1 victory over Bucknell. She capped the weekend with 26 assists, 11 digs, four block assists and three kills in a 3-0 win over NJIT that clinched the championship.
Quirarte earned a spot on the Blue Devil Classic All-Tournament Team after pacing the Blue Devils with 44 kills (4.4/set). She added 20 digs (2.0/set) and 13 total blocks (1.3/set) in Central's 3-0 weekend.
Quirarte started her CCSU career with a match-high 17 kills and .366 hitting percentage in a 3-0 win over Fairfield on Friday. She also added a season-high 20 kills in a 3-1 victory over Bucknell on Saturday and closed out the tournament with strong defensive play against NJIT when she posted three solo blocks and four block assists to go with seven kills.
Central is back in action at the UIC Invitational on Friday and Saturday, September 4-5. The Blue Devils play Illinois-Chicago and Chicago State on Friday afternoon.
