Volleyball Defeats Fairleigh Dickinson in Straight Sets
Central hits .317 as a team in the win.
The Central Connecticut volleyball team hit .317 as a team and defeated Fairleigh Dickinson, 3-0 (25-13, 26-24, 25-17), on Sunday at Detrick Gymnasium in Northeast Conference action. Three Blue Devils notched double-digit kills in the match and improved to 11-13 overall and 3-8 in NEC play, while the Knights fell to 9-16 overall and 2-8 in the NEC.
Central pulled away in the first set after breaking a 4-4 tie with a 10-1 run. Senior Makenna Lommori served seven of the points and junior Cassidy Stankowski compiled four kills during the spurt, including the kill that started the run. The Knights were unable to get closer than seven points the rest of the set and a kill by Stankowski closed out the set.
In the second set, Fairleigh Dickinson forged a 7-5 lead after scoring four straight points to force a CCSU timeout. The Blue Devils came back to take an 8-7 lead before the teams went back-and-forth until the closing points. Kills by junior Erika Jones, senior Heather Trueman and Stankowski made it 24-21. The Knights came back to tie it up, but kills by Trueman and Stankowski closed the set out for CCSU.
The Blue Devils trailed in the third set, 16-14, before consecutive kills by Lommori tied it up. After the teams traded points, Lommori served the final eight points of the match to help CCSU close out the match with a 25-17 win in the set.
Stankowski hit a match-high .706 and had 13 kills. Lommori added 13 kills and a team-high 24 assists. Jones finished with 10 kills, while senior Ashley Lenington had 20 assists. Junior Rachel Fish and sophomore Lindsey Massicotte each had 12 digs. Sophomore Maddie Smith had a match-high five blocks.
Alex Lolland led FDU with nine kills, Allison Butler had 27 assists and Savanna Wray had 11 digs.
The Blue Devils return to action on Friday, Nov. 6, against Bryant in their final home match of the season.
