Women's Golf NEC Championship Preview
The Blue Devils look to win their first NEC title since 2001.
The Central Connecticut women's golf team will compete in the 2012 Northeast Conference Championships this weekend. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will be held at the LPGA International Golf Course in Daytona Beach, FL. Stroke play action begin on Friday, April 27th and conclude with the final round played on Sunday, April 29th.
First-year head coach Carly Ludwig said of her team, "I think moving into NEC's the team is definitely as prepared as it could be. All they can do now is go out there have fun and enjoy playing golf as Blue Devils." The Blue Devils will look to claim their first NEC title since 2001. At last year's tournament, Central placed ninth of 11 teams with a final score of 1,037 strokes.
Central Connecticut is coming off of their first tournament victory of the 2011-12 season at the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational which wrapped up on Tuesday, April 17th. The team shot a 974 and dramatically edged Robert Morris in a one-hole sudden-death playoff to earn the tournament's top spot. Central also finished ahead of NEC rivals Wagner, Mount St. Mary's, and St. Francis (N.Y.).
Going into the 2012 spring season, Central was picked to finish eighth in the preseason NEC coaches poll below Monmouth (7), Wagner (6), Robert Morris (5), LIU Brooklyn (4), St. Francis (P.A.) (3), Fairleigh Dickinson (2), and Sacred Heart (1). The Blue Devils were tabbed tied with Mount St. Mary's (8) and ahead of St. Francis (N.Y.)(10) and Wagner (11).
"This team has been on such an amazing journey this season. They have broken down every wall and preconceived notion about the women's golf program at Central and I couldn't be more proud to be a part of that." Ludwig added.
