Berube Records Double-Double, Blue Devils Fall to Sacred Heart Saturday
Women's basketball faces Mount St. Mary's on Monday at 7 p.m.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team fell to Sacred Heart 73-46 on Saturday afternoon in New Britain, CT. Sophomore Ashley Berube recorded her sixth double-double of the season with a team-high 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Blue Devils return to action on Monday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. when it hosts Mount St. Mary's in Detrick Gymnasium.
Central led 5-3 before the Pioneers went on a 9-0 to take a 12-5 lead with 7:14 to play in the first quarter. The Blue Devils battled back cutting the lead 15-12 with 4:36 to go in the quarter, but SHU responded with a 11-4 run to end the first 10 minutes of play with a 26-16 lead. Sacred Heart continued to push the ball opening the second quarter on a 14-3 run to increase the lead to 40-19 with three minutes to go in the half. Central struggled to find the rim shooting just 21.4 percent (3-of-14) in the second.
At the halftime break, Sacred Heart led 44-25. Katherine Hines had 17 first half points for the Pioneers and Berube had nine points for Central. To start the second half, the Blue Devils cut into the Pioneer's lead with baskets from Berube and sophomore Emma McCamus to 46-29 with 7:11 remaining. SHU responded with a 7-3 run to extend the lead to 20 points heading into the fourth quarter.
Senior Sydney Hines provided a spark of the bench scoring six of the 14 fourth quarter points for the Blue Devils. The team shot 42.9 percent (6-of-14) in the final quarter.
Central forced 18 Sacred Heart turnovers and scored 22 points in the paint. Senior Kiana Patterson was the only other Blue Devil to hit double-figures with 11 points and three assists. Junior Bruna Vila Artigues had three points, four rebounds, and two blocks.
