Women's Basketball Falls to Brown in Season Opener
The Blue Devils fell to Brown 68-63.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team fell to Brown, 68-65, on its season opener on Tuesday night, in Providence, RI. After controlling the lead for most of the game, the Blue Devils got into foul trouble down the stretch giving Brown 22 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter.
Central falls to 1-0 to start the year and Brown improves to 1-0. The Blue Devils will host Lehigh on Saturday, Nov. 10 for its home opener.
Senior guard Kiana Patterson led CCSU with 21 points going 9-22 from the floor.
Central opened scoring when junior Bruna Vila Artigues gave sophomore Ashley Berube a high lob pass for a layup. The two teams traded baskets a majority of the first quarter and Brown had a slight 14-10 lead at the end of the first.
The Blue Devils outscored the Bears 23-13 in the second quarter after applying full court pressure forcing four Brown turnovers. With 22 seconds left before halftime, senior Sydney Hines drove baseline to draw two defenders and found sophomore Emma McCamus on the wing for a deep two to increase the Blue Devil lead 33-27. Patterson was 5-10 from the floor with 11 points at half.
Brown responded by applying full court pressure of their own resulting in 28 total turnovers from the Central. The Bears went 15-22 from the foul line in the fourth quarter to close out the home victory. Seniors Justine Gaziano and Shayna Mehta combined for 43 points for the Bears.
Berube was just short of a double-double recording 10 points and nine rebounds. McCamus also finished with 10 points and grabbed five boards for Central.
