The Central Connecticut women's basketball team will host the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers in Detrick Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. tip tonight. This is the second meeting this season between the first place Blue Devils (14-8, 10-1 NEC) and Terriers (7-16, 4-7 NEC). Tonight's contest will also be aired exclusively on ESPN3. Today's Game • The first place Blue Devils (14-8, 10-1 NEC) host the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers (7-16, 4-7 NEC) for a Northeast Conference matchup in Detrick Gymnasium at 7 p.m. This is the 12th NEC contest for both the Blue Devils and Terriers as both teams conclude week 6 of conference play.
Series History • The Blue Devils hold a commanding lead over the Terriers in the all-time Division I series history, 24-8, including a tight 51-49 victory back on Jan. 26 earlier this season. With the victory, CCSU is now 10-2 against SFBK while under the direction of head coach Beryl Piper. Piper is also a perfect 6-0 against the Terriers in Detrick Gym.
Earlier This Season • This is the second meeting this season between the Blue Devils and Terriers. The two teams battled in Brooklyn, NY back on Jan. 26 with CCSU edging SFBK 51-49. The Terriers had a last second chance to tie or win the game, but a shot by Jaymee Veney caromed of the side of the rim and the Blue Devils escaped with the win. Freshman Camden Musgrave led Central with 12 points on three-of-eigth shooting from the floor. Sarah Benedetti was the high scorer for SFBK with 11 on three-of-nine shooting.
Last Year's Meetings • The Blue Devils and Terriers split a pair of meetings with each other last season with both teams picking up wins on their respective home courts. CCSU defeated SFBK in a thrilling overtime game 71-66 on Jan. 25 in Detrick Gym, before the Terriers got revenge exactly one week later in Brooklyn with a 71-50 victory of their own on Feb. 1.
Scouting SFBK • SFBK enters today's matchup with a 7-16 overall record and 4-7 mark in NEC play. They are coming off a 63-60 loss at Wagner on Saturday, Feb. 7. SFBK was led by Benedetti who finished the game tying her career-high with 28 points. Veney had 15 points and 10 boards to record her seventh double-double of the season. The Terriers have four players who are averaging double-figures. Benedetti leads the way with 13.3 ppg and does most of her damge from behind the arc, connecting on 50-of-174 three point attempts. Veney and Leah Fechko control the glass with 7.8 and 8.0 rebounds per game respectively.
Last Time Out • Junior TeJahne Malone recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 18 points and 14 rebounds as the Blue Devils defeated Mount St. Mary's 60-49 on Saturday at home. Watras added 16 points off the bench for CCSU. Central shot 44.7% (21-47) from the floor in the game, including a 59.1% (13-22) mark from the floor in the second half.
Seven-Straight • Since a tough 54-50 loss to Mount St. Mary's on Jan. 12, the Blue Devils have not lost and are currently on a seven-game winning streak. Over the streak, CCSU is winning by an average of 10.7 points.
NEC Tournament Bound • With the 60-49 victory over the Mount on Saturday, the Blue Devils officially clinched a spot in the 2015 NEC Tournament. This is the fifth time in eight seasons head coach Beryl Piper has led a team to the NEC Tournament.
Prior to NEC Play • The Blue Devils were just 4-7 in non-conference action prior to the start of NEC play. However, as of today, the seven CCSU losses came against teams that currently have a winning record. In fact, the combined overall record of the seven non-conference teams that beat CCSU is 108-55.
