Blue Devils Defeat UMass Lowell 81-58 on Saturday
The Blue Devils defeated the UMass Lowell River Hawks 81-58 on Saturday at the Costello Athletic Center.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team defeated UMass-Lowell 81-58 at the Costello Athletic Center in Lowell, Mass on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Blue Devils' record to 2-2 on the season and the River Hawks fall to 0-3. CCSU was led by 16 points from junior forward TeJahne Malone and 10 points and 12 rebounds from junior guard Kayla Miller.
Malone finished the game 8-13 shooting with three rebounds and one assist in 20 minutes of play. Miller's double-double came on 5-12 shooting from the floor with the 12 boards. She also had two assists, one steal and a block on the afternoon.
The Blue Devils and River Hawks got off to a slow start as neither team recorded a field goal until two minutes into the game. The Blue Devils picked up the pace and pressure and started to pull away from the River Hawks after the first media timeout. With the score tied at 4-4, Central went on a 10-2 run from the 15:52 mark to the 11:24 mark and never trailed in the game again.
CCSU saw five players finish in the double figures. Malone led all scorers with 16, junior Nicole Ferguson had 13, senior Kaley Watras had 11, Miller had 10 and sophomore Chayla Lewis also chipped in with 10.
The Blue Devils shot 49.3% from the floor, including 40% from beyond the arc. Ferguson led the Blue Devils with three triples in the game in five attempts. Central also shot 70% from the free throw line making seven out of ten attempts.
The Blue Devils bench outscored the River Hawks bench 33-16, with 11 coming from Watras. Watras finished 4-5 shooting and was a perfect 3-3 from the free throw line. She also led the team in assists with three and recorded a game-high three steals.
The Blue Devils will return home for their next contest on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. against another America East opponent, the Vermont Catamounts. Fans who are not in attendance can watch the action live, for free, on NECFrontRow.com.
