Women's Basketball Hosts Hartford Tonight
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team will host the University of Hartford at 7 p.m. in Detrick Gymnasium.
The Central Connecticut women's basketball team hosts intrastate rival Hartford for its 2014-15 Home Opener at Detrick Gymnasium. The Blue Devils (1-0) and Hawks (1-0) both opened the season with victories on Friday night. CCSU defeated Hofstra 71-66 in overtime and Hartford edged Cornell, 48-46.
Series History • This is the 28th meeting between the Hawks and Blue Devils as Division I opponents. Hartford holds a 19-8 edge in the series, but since the series resumed in 2010 the teams have split four meetings. CCSU won last season's meeting at Hartford by a score of 82-50. The 82 points were the most the Blue Devils ever scored against the Hawks.
The Roster • The Blue Devil roster will feature nine returning players for the 2014-15 season. All nine saw game action during the 2013-14 campaign. The squad will also feature four new faces as head coach Beryl Piper and the Blue Devils welcome four freshmen. The 13 player roster will feature two seniors, three juniors, three sophomores, one redshirt freshman and four true freshmen.
Piper Tops The List • Beryl Piper begins her eighth season as the head coach of the CCSU women's basketball program as the winningest Division I coach in the history of the program. Piper's 94 wins are tops during CCSU's Division I era, as is her career winning percentage.
Non-Conference Success • CCSU won six non-conference games last season marking the fourth straight year the Blue Devils have won six or more non-conference games. CCSU's .600 winning percentage is the second best non-conference mark under head coach Beryl Piper. The only time the Blue Devils were better in the non-conference slate was in 2010-11 when the team went 7-3 (.700). The Blue Devils were also 4-0 at home in non-conference, the third time under Piper that CCSU has had a perfect record at home heading into NEC play.
