Men's Track and Field Earns NEC Honors
The Blue Devils were produced nine members to the all-conference lists.
The Northeast Conference announced the all-conference selections and major awards winners for the 2017 outdoor track and field season in a release on Friday, June 2. The four-time reigning NEC Champions were honored with nine all-conference selections after claiming its four title this season with a total of 146.5 points.
CCSU produced a trio of junior athletes to the All-Northeast Conference First Team. Amongst the three was Austin Trainor who won the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:30.22. Following the league championships, Trainor placed eighth in the steeple at the at IC4A's and finished 42nd overall at the NCAA East Preliminary Regional Meet at Kentucky.
Joining the steeple specialist on the first team was Sam Borecki and Tyler Latham. Borecki won the pole vault after a jump-off with a final mark of 4.50 meters. Latham was a gold medalist in the javelin (59.95m) and also placed fifth overall in the long jump with a collegiate personal best jump of 7.02 meters.
Senior Joseph Gioielli tackled two spots on the All-Conference Second Team in the 800m and 1,500m. The veteran was credited for 25 points himself after competing in the 4x400m and 4x800m relays, and the 800m and 1,500m runs. Gioielli was the NEC Runner-Up in both the 800m (1:53.95) and the 1,500m (3:59.53) while helping the 4x800m relay earn bronze (7:53.13) and the 4x400m place sixth.
The Blue Devils 110m hurdle school record-holder, sophomore Edwin Alston, was named to the All-Conference Second Team along with Gioielli. Alston earned a silver medal at the NEC's while snapping his previous 110H program record with a new fastest time of 14.14s.
Freshmen Jonathan Gill, Jarred Creech, and Marquis Ward were selected to the All-Rookie Team to round out the 2017 all-conference selections and put a staple on another successfull Central Connecticut men's outdoor track and field season.
