Blue Tops White in Annual Spring Game
Blue Devils will open the season August 30 on the road at James Madison
Blue topped White in the Annual CCSU Football Spring Game on Friday night, the first under new head coach Pete Rossomando. The game was played on Friday night in front of an estimated 1,500 fans at Arute Field. The Blue Team was comprised of the defensive unit.
The scoring system for the night led to a 48-28 win for the Blue Team. The defense received points for turnovers, defense stops, tackles for a loss or sakcs and pass break ups.
The offense received points for touchdowns, extra points, long runs and passes and field goals.
Offensively the Blue Devils were led by quarterback Nick SanGiacomo who finished 19-of-31 for 210 yards and a touchdown. He was also intercepted once. Quinn Fleeting finished 2-of-5 for 21 yards and also rushed for 24 yards in the game.
Eric Brainard rushed a game-high 19 times for 40 yards and one touchdown. Levar Shannon carried the ball 10 times for 28 yards. Rob Hollomon had four carries for 11 yards and scored once. Dan Hebert led the receiving core with six catches for 83 yards. Aaron Berardino caught two balls, including one for a touchdown.
Defensively Keir Minor led the way with 10 tackles including two for a loss. Kamahl Valentine and Josh Alaeze each added six stops. Alaeze had a sack, while Jalen Hill had two in the contest.
The game marked the end of the first spring under Rossomando, who was named head coach four months ago.
"I thought we would start slow," Rossomando said about his first Spring at CCSU. "The first time through a system on both sides of the ball it's always a little bit different, but it was good. In the middle we hit a couple road bumps on offense, defense hit a road bump a little bit later on...but in the end everyone really came out and really gave a great effort. And the effort is the most improtant part."
Rossomando and the Blue Devils are set to play a 12-game schedule in 2014, including six home games. The schedule begins on Aug. 30 at Towson. The first home game will come on Sept. 6 vs. Albany on Arute Field. Central will also play non-conference road games at Holy Cross and Dartmouth, followed by a home game vs. Rhode Island. The first conference game of the season comes on Oct. 11 vs. Duquesne, that is Homecoming in New Britain. Central will also play Northeast Conference road games at Robert Morris, Bryant and St. Francis U, as well as home league games vs. Wagner and Sacred Heart. A non-conference home game vs. Howard will take place on Nov. 15.
