Watson, Hollomon, Calitri Earn NEC Honors
Senior Chuck Watson, junior Rob Hollomon and junior Steven Calitri earned NEC Weekly Awards on Monday.
A trio of Central Connecticut football players have earned weekly honors from the Northeast Conference for their performance in Saturday's 20-17 win over Albany. Senior Chuck Watson, junior Rob Hollomon and junior Steven Calitriall played a major role in the Blue Devils' road victory over the Great Danes.
Hollomon earns NEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors after posting 254 all-purpose yards and a touchdown as a running back and kick returner Saturday night. Hollomon rushed 30 times for 145 yards and a touchdown. It was Hollomon's 59-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter that tied the game at 17-17.
He followed it up by accounting for 41 of the 57 yards gained on CCSU's game winning drive late in the fourth quarter. In addition to his 145 rushing yards, Hollomon posted 5 receptions for 60 yards and two returns for 49 yards.
It is Hollomon's second NEC weekly honor of the season. He is sharing this week's award with Kyle Harbridge of Saint Francis U.
Watson earns his first NEC Defensive Player of the Week award following CCSU's great defensive effort against Albany. The senior linebacker made a career-high 15 tackles, including 3.0 TFL to help his squad earn their first victory of the season.
Watson and the CCSU defense limited the Great Danes to only 2.8 yards per carry during Saturday's 20-17 road win. With the game tied at 17-17 in the fourth quarter, Watson delivered a tackle for a loss of three yards that halted Albany's momentum. He also had his first sack of the season in the first quarter of the game.
Calitri earns NEC Special Team's Player of the Week honors in large part because of his game winning field goal with 17 seconds left in the fourth quarter. In addition, he converted the two longest field goal attempts of his collegiate career on Saturday night, with the game winner setting a new career long.
With the score tied at 17-17, Calitri connected on a 40-yard game-winning field goal with 00:17 remaining on the clock. Calitri, who was a perfect 4-for-4 on kicks, including 2 PATs, was also responsible for the game's first points. He gave CCSU a 3-0 lead 6:29 into the contest when he drilled a 31-yarder.
The Blue Devils return to action on Saturday at Rhode Island. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
