Holmes Named NEC Offensive Player of the Week
Junior Tyrell Holmes was named NEC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday morning.
Central Connecticut wide receiver Tyrell Holmes was named NEC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. The Bristol, CT, native has made a successful transition from defensive back to wide receiver for his junior season with CCSU. Holmes was a major contributor to the Blue Devils 38-29 victory over Saint Francis in Saturday's Homecoming Game.
Holmes accounted for the second-highest single-game total by a NEC receiver this season with five catches for 153 yards and one touchdown on Saturday. Averaging 30.6 yards per reception, Holmes saw all five of his catches go for either a first down or a touchdown.
He extended CCSU's lead to 21-3 when he hauled in a pass from sophomore quarterback Nick SanGiacomo and went 66 yards for a touchdown with 4:06 left in the first half.
Twice in the second half, Holmes made key grabs on 3rd-down plays to move the chains. His 18-yard reception on the first play of the fourth quarter converted a 3rd-and-5 and set CCSU up at the SFU 8-yard line.
Contributing to Holmes' big performance was the excellent play of SanGiacomo who completed 18-of-29 pass attempts for three touchdowns and a career-high 242 yards.
Bryant's Jordan Harris, the active career leading receiver in Division I FCS, is only other NEC player with a higher single-game total than Holmes this fall.
The Blue Devils will continue Northeast Conference play on Saturday at Sacred Heart.
