Baseball Stopped by Albany on Tuesday
Fitzsimons collects two hits for Central.
The Central Connecticut baseball team fell to Albany, 6-1, on Tuesday afternoon at CCSU Baseball Field. The Great Danes built a three-run lead in the early going and limited the Blue Devils to just three hits to pick up the win in non-conference action.
Senior Connor Fitzsimons led the Blue Devils with two hits on the day. CCSU slipped to 5-7 overall on the season.
UAlbany took a 3-0 lead after three innings. Will Miller led off the game, getting hit by a pitch and stole second before moving to third base on a fly ball. He scored on a ground out by Kyle Sacks to make it 1-0.
The Great Danes pushed two across in the third. A one-out walk to Tre Todd and a double by Sacks put runners in scoring position. A passed ball scored Todd and after Albany loaded the bases, a walk to Garrett Longhurst brought home Sacks to make it 3-0.
The Blue Devils managed to get a run back in the seventh. Junior Tyler Coleman led off the inning by drawing a walk and CCSU would load the bases after Fitzsimons and freshman David Balunek each walked. Sophomore Dylan Maher would pinch-hit and loft a flyball to centerfield to bring home Coleman and make it 3-1, but Central was unable to do any further damage.
UAlbany would respond with three runs in the top of the eighth on three hits. The Great Danes loaded the bases with one out and a sacrifice fly by Karson Canaday would bring in one run before a bases-clearing triple from Will Miller made it 6-1.
Fitzsimons finished the day 2-for-3 at the plate for Central, while sophomore Ryan Costello had one hit.
Freshman Kyle Anderson started for the Blue Devils and gave up three runs.
Brian Paulino started for Albany and went 6.0 innings, allowing just two hits, while striking out one and walking one. Sacks led the Great Danes with two hits, while Miller drove in two runs.
Central opens Northeast Conference play against Bryant this weekend. The teams will play a four-game series beginning Friday, March 18, at CCSU Baseball Field.
