Casey Brown Named NEC Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Blue Devils play Bryant in NEC Championship on Thursday.
Casey Brown, a senior on the Central Connecticut baseball team, was named the Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week it was announced on Monday by the league office. Brown pitched the Blue Devils into the NEC Championship with a complete game victory in CCSU's 6-4 12-inning win against Wagner on Saturday.
In his final home start for the Blue Devils, the southpaw threw an NEC single-game season-high 12.0 innings to help CCSU clinch the final spot in the league championship tournament. Logging his second complete game of the season, Brown scattered 11 hits and walked one while registering a career-high nine strikeouts, including seven looking.
Brown, who faced the minimum number of batters in six of 12 innings, worked out of trouble in the ninth and 10th frames. With one run already in against him in the inning, Brown induced a groundout to end the ninth and strand Wagner's potential go-ahead run at third base. With two runners on and two outs in his 10th inning of work, CCSU's senior lefty kept the game tied at 4-4 by recording a fly out to centerfield. Brown retired the side in order in the 11th inning and also faced the minimum in the 12th thanks to an inning-ending double play ball.
Brown's final line from the game: CG, 12.0 IP, 4 R, 4 ER, 11 H, 1 BB, 9 K, 1.00 WHIP.
With the win on Saturday, Central clinched a spot in the NEC Tournament at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. The Blue Devils will take on top-seeded Bryant at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 26.
