Baseball Falls to St. Bonaventure on Saturday
Blue Devils wrap up the series on Sunday in Punta Gorda, FL.
The Central Connecticut baseball team fell to St. Bonaventure, 8-1, on Saturday in Port Charlotte, FL. Sophomore Ryan Costello had a double and scored the Blue Devils' only run.
CCSU slips to 1-1 on the season, while St. Bonaventure goes to 4-2.
The Bonnies opened the scoring with five runs in the fifth inning. Tommy LaCongo singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Back-to-back singles by Matt Eastman and Taishi Terashima, followed by a double from Cole Peterson drove in the first two runs. After a pitching change for CCSU, the Bonnies drew a walk and took advantage of an error to keep the inning going. Ted Dilts brought home a run on a fielder's choice and a single by David Vaccaro made it 5-0.
The Blue Devils got a run back in the bottom of the sixth after Costello reached with a two-out double. A St. Bonaventure error brought him home to make it 5-1, but Central was unable to do any further damage.
The Bonnies pushed the game out of reach with three runs in the top of the seventh. The lead was enough for Brandon Schlimm who scattered five hits over 6.0 innings of work, while striking out three and walking three. Vaccaro finished with two hits and two RBI to lead the St. Bonaventure offense that collected 11 hits.
Central got its six hits from six different players. Sophomore Dean Lockery and Costello each had a double. Freshman Brandon Fox started for CCSU and went 4.1 innings and struck out two.
The teams wrap up the series on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in Punta Gorda, FL, at South County Regional Park.
