Griebel Wins NEC Individual Title
The Central Connecticut women's cross country team finished fourth at NECs.
Central Connecticut senior Alasia Griebel captured the individual title at the 2011 Northeast Conference Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning. Griebel topped the field with a time of 18:42.10 over the 5k course at Holmdel Park. Her performance helped push the CCSU women's cross country team to a fourth place finish.
Griebel finished five seconds ahead of Eimear Black of Bryant to earn the victory in her first NEC Championship meet. Griebel transferred to Central Connecticut this fall as a fifth year senior and graduate student.
The Blue Devils earned 99 team points to finish in fourth place. Quinnipiac, Sacred Heart and Monmouth took the top three spots in the meet, with the Bobcats posting a team score of 44. Central was only nine points behind Monmouth for third place.
Sophomore Krisztina Dearborn finished 13th in the race with a 19:31.40 performance. She was followed by classmate Elizabeth Eberhardt, freshman Shannon McBride and senior Amanda Asaro who completed Central's score card. Eberhardt posted a 19:50.30 to finish 23rd, McBride a 20:09.50 to place 32nd and Asaro took 34th with a 20:13.60.
Displacing for the Blue Devils were senior Sara Larkin with a time of 21:04.80 and sophomore Megan MacBryde who ran a 21:43.30 to finish 71st.
The Blue Devils improved one spot over their 2010 performance at the NEC meet.
Trailing Central in the team results were St. Francis (PA), Robert Morris, Bryant, Mount St. Mary's, Wagner, St. Francis (NY), Fairleigh Dickinson and Long Island.
