Men's Soccer Wins, 2-1, at Sacred Heart
Blue Devils pick up second straight Northeast Conference win.
The Central Connecticut men's soccer team defeated Sacred Heart, 2-1, on Friday afternoon in Fairfield, CT. The Blue Devils got a first half goal from senior Zach Zurita and tacked on the eventual game-winner from sophomore Ryan Taylor after halftime.
The win improves CCSU to 4-6-2 overall and 2-1 in Northeast Conference play. Sacred Heart slips to 1-9-1 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
Zurita opened the scoring for Central in the 12th minute when he took a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box and put his shot into the back of the net.
Junior Nick Velleca would protect the CCSU lead with three saves in the opening period before the Blue Devils managed to add a goal. At the 59:02 mark, Zurita set up Taylor who pushed a low shot past the SHU keeper, who had come off his line, to make it 2-0.
The Pioneers managed to get a goal back in the 80th minute when Shaquille Saunchez picked up a loose ball off a Kieran Walsh free kick and sent it into the back of the net to make it 2-1.
The Central defense would finish the job as CCSU collected its second straight Northeast Conference win. Velleca finished the game with four saves, while SHU's Tucker Hackett made two stops.corner kick. Murray Cockburn's shot off that corner just missed the inside post.
Central returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 25, when it hosts LIU Brooklyn. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. following and is part of a doubleheader with the CCSU women's soccer team, which plays at 1:00 p.m.
