Volleyball Drops NEC Match to Saint Francis U
The Central Connecticut women's volleyball team fell to Saint Francis U on Sunday afternoon at Detrick Gymnasium.
The Central Connecticut women's volleyball team fell to Saint Francis U on Sunday afternoon at Detrick Gymnasium. The Blue Devils (5-10, 1-2 NEC) were led by 20 kills, 22 assists and 12 digs from junior Makenna Lommori. The Red Flash improve to 7-11 overall and 3-1 in the Northeast Conference play with the victory.
The Blue Devils dropped the first set 25-23 and won the second 25-23. Saint Francis rallied to win the third set 25-21 and the fourth 25-21.
Lommori posted her second triple-double of the weekend in the loss. She connected for 20 kills on 49 attacks and posted a .224 hitting percentage. She also recorded 22 of CCSU's 49 assists and 12 of the Blue Devils 55 digs. Lommori also moved into fifth place on CCSU's career assists list during the match. She passed Chris Stuart (2,521) and finished the day with 2,525 assists for her career.
Junior Ashley Lenington stepped in to the starting lineup and split the setter position with Lommori on Sunday. Lenington posted a team-high 25 assists and also had 12 digs.
The 12 digs for Lenington and Lommori led the Blue Devil defense. Sophomore Rachel Fish also posted double-digits with 11 and senior Brittany Schumacher followed her with eight.
Senior Rachel Dunlap led CCSU's net defense with five blocks. She also posted an incredible .632 hitting percentage, connecting on 12 of 19 attacks without committing an attack error.
SFU had three hitters recorded double-digit kills. Red Flash setter Alanna Blenkarn had a match-high 52 assists and libero Jenna Veres posted a match-high 24 digs.
The Blue Devils will continue NEC play on the road next weekend with trips to LIU Brooklyn and St. Francis Brooklyn. CCSU and LIU have met in the NEC Championship Match each of the last two seasons. Both matches will be available to watch live on NECFrontRow.com.
