Volleyball Drops Two at UConn on Saturday
Blue Devils lose a pair of five set matches vs. UConn and UNH
The Central Connecticut women's volleyball team dropped a pair of five set matches on Saturday at the University of Connecticut, and is now 0-3 overall on the season. In the first game the Blue Devils nearly overcame a 2-0 hole before forcing a fifth set but dropping a 3-2 decision to the University of Connecticut. They dropped a 3-2 decision to New Hampshire in the second match of the day.
In the first match of the day, after dropping the first two sets, Central rallied to claim sets three and four, but fell short 15-10 in the fifth and deciding set on Saturday. With the loss the Blue Devils are 0-2 on the season.
Junior Heather Trueman led the offense for the Blue Devils with 14 kills. Junior Makenna Lommori had 21 assists, 12 digs and seven kills while classmate Ashley Lenington added 11 assists.
The Blue Devils fell behind quickly, losing the first set 25-9 and the second 25-22. But Central rallied, and won the third set 27-25 before claiming the fourth set 25-17 to even the match. The Blue Devils committed only three hitting errors in the fourth set while holding the Huskies to a .000 hitting percentage in the set victory.
UConn rebounded in the fifth and deciding set, posting 10 kills and only three errors to claim the victory and move to 2-0 on the season.
Senior Rachel Dunlap led a potent Blue Devil defense with a block solo and seven block assists. Sophomore Brooke Schwab added six block assists, as did Lommori. Senior Kyla Bielert added a block solo and five block assists in three sets played. Senior Brittany Schumacher had 24 digs in the match. The Blue Devils had 75 as a team as well as eight service aces.
In the second match of the day the Blue Devils lost the first set before rebounding to win the second set 25-21 and the third 25-23. New Hampshire won the fourth set 26-24 and then the fifth set 15-11 to post their first victory of the season.
Lommori led the offensive attack with a team-high 16 kills and also had 28 assists and 17 digs in the loss. Trueman added 14 kills to go along with 12 digs. Lennington had 29 assists for the Blue Devils while also posting 10 digs. Central had 79 digs in the match and hit an impressive .245 on offense. Dunlap had 16 kills and only three errors to hit .464, a team-high.
Lommori was named All-Tournament for her effort over the weekend.
The Blue Devils will return to action next weekend at the Harvard Invitational with matches vs. Santa Clara, Delaware and Harvard on Friday and Saturday.
