Women's Indoor Track and Field Competes at Great Dane Classic Saturday
The CCSU women's indoor track and field team competed at the Great Dane Classic in Staten Island, NY on Saturday.
The Central Connecticut women's indoor track and field team competed at the 2016 Great Dane Classic on Saturday in Staten Island, NY at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex. Junior's Brittany Mendelson and Melissa Wolliston highlighted the day for the Blue Devils recording top-20 finishes while setting new personal best marks.

Mendelson recorded the best finish of the day for CCSU logging a 12th place finish in the 1,000 meter run. The 2015 NEC individual cross country champion picked up right where she left of in her 2016 indoor season opener crossing the finish line with a new personal best time of 3:02.23. The time also qualified her to compete in the 1,000 meter at the NEICAAA Championships in Boston, MA on Feb. 26-27.
Wolliston logged a 17th place finish for the Blue Devils in the 60 meter hurdles. She sprinted to a new personal best mark of 8.93 breaking her previous best time of 8.97 which she set last weekend at the Yale Collegiate Invitational. Her time also qualified her to compete at the NEICAAA Championships and it currently ranks 13th of 43 on the NEICAAA performance list.
In the 60 meter dash, junior Sherise Truman paced the Blue Devils with a 53rd place finish out of 103 sprinters. She clocked in the result with a time of 8.03. Truman followed that up with a 34th place finish out of 81 in the 200 meter, registering a time of 25.76.
Classmate Taylor Boncal turned in a time of 1:00.17 in the 400 meter for the Blue Devils to pick up a 47th place finish out of 82. Boncal's time of 1:00.17 was just tenths of a second off of her personal best mark of 59.94.
Senior Ally Gates crossed the finish line 22nd in the 3,000 meter run. The veteran completed the event in 10:46.45 to earn the result. Sophomore Victoria Cronin joined Gates in the 3,000 meter run and recorded a new personal best time of 10:56.07 to finish just behind her teammate in 28th place.
Junior Sarah Hicks and freshman Sierra Nesmith also competed in the 60 meter hurdles with Wolliston and they both also turned in NEICAAA qualifying times. Hicks was slotted 24th in the event after crossing the finish line with a time of 9.06 and Nesmith was 39th finishing at 9.21.
The Blue Devils 4x400 relay team of Boncal, Nesmith, Wolliston and freshman Samantha Hartmayer recorded a 23rd place finish out of 42 teams with a combined time of 4:06.73.
Nesmith led the Blue Devils in the field events picking up a tied for 14th place finish in the triple jump. The rookie leaped to 11.03 meters in her first collegiate triple jump action to earn the result.
Freshman Cecelia Blamahsha cleared 1.50 meters for the Blue Devils to log a 26th place finish in the high jump.
The CCSU women's indoor track and field team will return to action next on Friday, Jan. 22 at the Joe Donahue Invite. The meet will be held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Roxbury, MA.
