Women's Track Competes at Yale on Saturday
The Blue Devils opened the 2016 indoor track and field season at Coxe Cage in New Haven, CT on Saturday.
The Central Connecticut women's indoor track and field team opened the 2016 indoor season at the Yale Collegiate Invitational on Saturday at the Coxe Cage in New Haven, CT. The Blue Devils had 10 top-10 finishes on the day and were led by junior Melissa Wolliston who posted a second place finish in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.97 to help pace CCSU in their first meet of the indoor season.
Junior Sherise Truman also earned one of those top-10 finishes picking up a fourth place result in the 60 meter dash for CCSU. She sprinted to a time of 7.90 in the preliminary round to qualify for the finals and then bettered her time to 7.88 in the finals to finish fourth overall.
Freshman Antonia Newman raced to an eighth place finish in her collegiate debut in the 200 meter dash for the Blue Devils. The rookie crossed the finish line with a time of 26.80 to earn the result.
In the 500 meter run junior Taylor Boncal broke the tape at the 1:18.96 mark to slot herself ninth overall out of 20 runners.
Four Blue Devils finished in the top-10 in the 60 meter hurdles led by Wolliston who clocked in a time of 8.97 in the finals heat for a runner-up finish, the best on the day for CCSU. She recorded a time of 8.95 in the preliminary round to get to the finals.
Wolliston was joined in the 60 meter hurdles finals by junior Sarah Hicks and freshman Eugenia Weaver. Hicks ran a time of 9.05 in the finals to record a fourth place finish after she qualified with a time of 9.00. Weaver finished at the 9.96 mark in the finals and placed sixth overall. She was able to run in the finals heat after qualifying with a time of 9.40 in her collegiate debut.
Freshman Sierra Nesmith also recorded a top-10 finish in the 60 meter hurdles. She finished ninth in the preliminary round after completing the race in 9.41.
Central Connecticut also picked up three top-10 finishes as a team in the 4x400 meter relay and the distance medley. Central's 'A' 4x400 meter relay team recorded a third place finish clocking in a combined time of 3:59.44 and the 'B' team also posted a top-10 result coming in at 4:25.76, good for ninth overall.
The Blue Devils distance medley relay team earned a sixth place result turning in a time of 13:01.18 to round out all of CCSU's top-10 finishers at the Yale Collegiate Invite.
The women's indoor track and field team will return to action next Saturday at the Great Dane Classic held at the Ocean Breeze Complex in Staten Island, NY. The Ocean Breeze Complex will also serve as the venue for this season's Northeast Conference Championships Feb. 19-20.
