Central, Reid Take First at Mount St. Mary's
Katie Reid and Albrianna Farnum went to an individual playoff to decide first place.
The Central Connecticut women's golf team won the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational on Tuesday for the second consecutive year. Central led the field on both days finishing with a team score of 927, a 25 stroke victory over runner-up Robert Morris.
The two day tournament, which was scheduled for two rounds on day one and one round on day two, was hosted at Quail Valley Golf Club in Littlestown, PA. Northeast Conference rival Mount St. Mary's hosted the event.
Central (308/309/310/927) finished 63 strokes over par as a team, second place Robert Morris (309/319/324/952) followed the Blue Devils at 88 over-par. Saint Francis U (320/321/330/971), Fairleigh Dickinson (327/321/327/977), and Fairfield (328/322/334/984) rounded out the field's top-five, finishing third, fourth, and fifth respectively.
Senior Katie Reid (79/73/76/228) claimed the tournament's individual championship winning the event after a sudden death playoff round with teammate Albrianna Farnum (76/77/75/228). Reid started the day in second place and shot a 76 on Tuesday to give her the victory after defeating Farnum on the second hole of the playoff.
Head Coach Carly Ludwig said about Reid and Farnum, "I am very proud of both Albrianna and Katie for playing a solid 54 holes. This is a great win for Katie as a senior captain on this team. It was definitely a great way to finish out her last regular season tournament."
Farnum led her team on Tuesday shooting the lowest score of any Blue Devil, a 75, to give her a share of first-place at the conclusion of tournament play. Both Farnum and Reid were 12 strokes over-par heading into the playoff, four strokes ahead of the next competitor.
The vicory is Reid's first individual victory of her career and her second top-ten finish of the 2012-13 season. Farnum's second place finish is her highest individual finish of her career as a Blue Devil.
Both golfer's hit scoring milestone's at the tournament, shooting their lowest round scores of the season. Reid's 73 in round two marks her lowest round score of the season while Farnum's 75 in round three marks hers.
The Blue Devils were the only team in the field to place three competitors in the individual top-five. Senior Anna Ausanio (75/81/77/233) also placed in the top-five shooting a 77 on Tuesday to give her a fourth place finish. Ausanio started the third round in fifth place and shot 17 strokes over-par for the tournament to give the senior her fifth top-ten finish of the season. Ausanio leads the team in the category.
Freshman Sarah Boden (78/86/82/246) had her best round in round one to give her a 15th place finish individually. Boden was 30 stokes over par for the tournament. Senior Stephanie Bednar (88/78/92/258) tied for 32nd place.
The victory at the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational is Central's first tournament win since claiming the event's championship last season. The Blue Devils' team score of 927 is a boasting 47 stroke improvement from last year's 974.
"We couldn't have asked for a better prelude into NEC's. We set out to defend this title at the beginning of the semester and it's great to see their hard work paying off. I am hopeful that we can continue to ride this wave of confidence into the conference tournament next week and continue our season."
Central will be back in action at the NEC Conference Tournament on April 26th. The tournament is scheduled for three days, three rounds, and will conclude on April 28th. The Blue Devils will look to improve on their seventh place finish at last year's NEC Tournament.
