Softball Falls Against LIU Brooklyn
The Central Connecticut softball team dropped a doubleheader to LIU Brooklyn on Friday afternoon.
The Central Connecticut softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to LIU Brooklyn on Friday afternoon. The Blue Devils (24-16, 6-6 NEC) fell in game one, 4-3, and game two, 3-1, to the Blackbirds (19-30, 10-4 NEC).
Freshman Laura Messina pitched both games for the Blue Devils. She falls to 18-8 with the losses, despite allowing just three earned runs over 14 innings. Messina went the distance in both games. In the first game she allowed four runs, three earned on 14 hits. In game two she allowed three runs, all unearned, on seven hits. She struck out four in both games.
Senior Rebecca Mussatti led the offense in game one. She recorded four hits including an RBI triple and and RBI single. Mussatti added a fourth hit of the day in game two. She raised her season batting average to .357 with today's performance.
Freshman Kat Malcolm returned to the line-up after missing time with an injury. She recorded two hits in game one, including a triple down the right field line, and added a third hit in game two.
Game one turned in the first inning as Messina allowed a pair of hits, but two hit batters extended the frame and allowed LIU to score three runs. LIU's fourth run came in the fourth inning and proved to be the winning score.
Errors cost the Blue Devils in game two as all three of LIU's runs were unearned.
In game two, the Blue Devils managed just one run. Junior Nicole Springer hit a long solo home run with two-out in the third inning. Springer also had an RBI single in the first game.
Junior Macy Stefanski picked up a pair of hits in game two.
The Blue Devils out hit the Blackbirds 19-14 on the day, but LIU was able to force across seven runs over the two games.
The Blue Devils return to action on Sunday against Monmouth. The doubleheader will be the final NEC home games of the regular season and will also serve as Senior Day for the Class of 2012.
