Softball Drops Doubleheader at FDU
The Central Connecticut softball team falls to 0-2 in NEC play with Sunday's losses.
The Central Connecticut softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils (16-10, 0-2 NEC) dropped both games to the Knights (16-5, 2-0 NEC) by a score of 3-2.
Game One
Freshman Laura Messina took the loss in game one despite limiting the Knights to a single run over the first six innings. Messina allowed a pair of runs in the seventh inning as FDU earned the 3-2 walk-off victory.
Messina allowed three earned runs over 6.2 innings and struck out three. She falls to 10-4 on the season.
Sophomore Tessa Brown, senior Sarah Vlahos and freshman Ashley Black each had a hit for the Blue Devils.
Brown got the Blue Devils on the board with an RBI double in the first inning. Junior Nicole Springer drove in Central's second run with a ground out in the third inning. The RBI fielder's choice was set up by senior Rebecca Mussatti stealing second and third to get into scoring position.
Game Two
The Knights posted a second straight walk-off victory against the Blue Devils in game two. Sophomore Julie Marks limited FDU to three runs over six innings, but a pair of base hits and a pair of wild pitches allowed the Knights to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Blue Devils again scored a single run in the first and third inning.
Brown once again drove in the first inning run. This time with a solo home run.
In the third, Black singled, stole second and then advanced around the bases on fly outs by sophomore Arielle Bruno and Mussatti.
Brown finished the day with three hits and two RBI. Black was the only other Blue Devils to record a multi-hit day, she had two base hits.
The Blue Devils return to action on Tuesday afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader against Fairfield. The first game will begin at 2:30 p.m.
