Softball Earns Academic Honors from NFCA
The softball team earned the NFCA Team Academic Honor and eight players earned individual recognition.
The Central Connecticut softball team was honored with the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Academic Team Award on Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Devils are one of 133 NCAA Division I teams to earn the honor this year. Teams qualify for the award if they post a cumulative grade point average above 2.90.
Leading the Blue Devils in the classroom were eight student-athletes who posted grade point averages above 3.50 for the 2010-11 academic year. Then seniors Elizabeth Montemurro, Kendall Sours and Amanda Dilworth received the honor in their final year with the program, along with returning players Abby Harpp, Kate Hoffman, Samantha Cieri, Emily Bohmer and Tessa Brown.
"I'm proud of our team for their performance in the classroom and on the field last year," Franquet said. "This is an award that I believe we can receive every year and our goal is to become one of the top-50 teams in the country academically. With the support of Kevin Oliva, Karen Perezi and the rest of the staff in our Academic Center I have no doubt that our program will continue to produce academically successful student-athletes."
The Blue Devils are one of six Northeast conference squads to earn the award this season. Robert Morris, Monmouth, Bryant, Sacred Heart and Long Island were all recognized by the NFCA.
The academic honors cap the most successful season on the history of the CCSU softball program. The 2011 squad set a program record for wins with 29 and advanced to the Northeast Conference Tournament for the first time.
The 2012 season kicks off on February 24, with a three game series at Arizona State.
