Softball Tops Alumni Team, 6-1
Current and former Blue Devils got the chance to meet and play on Saturday.
The Central Connecticut softball team defeated a team of alumni by a score of 6-1 on Saturday morning. The event marked the end of Central's fall practice season and allowed current Blue Devils to meet and interact with former players.
"What a great day for Blue Devil Softball, this is our favorite time of the fall because our new players get to meet the foundation of our programs success," said Coach Jeff Franquet. "It is very important for our new and current players to meet and learn from the alumni of this program."
Current sophomore Arielle Bruno led off the game with a homerun to give her squad the lead. Bruno was a second team All-NEC selection for the Blue Devils last season and finished the day two-for-three with a homerun and a double. Junior Kelsey Barlow and freshman Alyssa McCourt each hit doubles in the game and senior Macy Stefanski scored two of her team's six runs in the game.
The alumni offense was led by a pair of key players from the 2011 CCSU squad, Amanda Dilworth and Kat Knowles. After leading off the first with a walk, Dilworth stole second and scored on an RBI single by Knowles, but that was the only run of the game for the alums. Liz Montemurro, Central's all-time leader in victories, was the starting pitcher for the Blue Devils allowing three runs.
Also, back for the game were Debbie Kelo and Stacey Hannon along with their former coach, Ron Pringle.
"We were truly honored to meet them (Debbie and Stacey) and share memories with them. Ron Pringle was the coach of the Blue Devils in the 80's so it was nice to have Coach Pringle in the dugout Saturday. We are so proud to have alumni who remained a part of this program for over 20 years and we hope to see more next year."
Franquet had a special message after the game, "We wanted to send a special thanks to all of the alumni that came back to play today. It was a great day, and it is always great to have alumni come back and support their program. Thank you to all who came back to play."
