Softball Sweeps UMES in Doubleheader
The Central Connecticut softball team swept a doubleheader from Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday.
The Central Connecticut softball team swept Maryland Eastern Shore in a doubleheader on Saturday. The Blue Devils (10-6) won the first game, 9-0, in six-innings and then earned a game two victory via forfiet.
Sophomore Julie Marks pitched a complete game one hitter to earn the game one victory. Marks tossed all six innings and allowed one hit. She struck out six and did not walk a batter. Marks was only two hitters above the minimum at the end of the game, facing 20 batters.
The Blue Devils got on the board with a pair of runs in the first inning. Senior Rebecca Mussatti and sophomore Tessa Brown walked to set the table in front of junior Nicole Springer and freshman Alyssa McCoart. Springer delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Mussatti and McCoart followed with an RBI double.
Central broke the game open in the top of the third with four runs. Mussatti again walked to start the rally, Brown followed with a single and Springer delivered her second sac fly of the game. Junior Kelsey Barlow scored Central's fourth run on an RBI single and two more runs came around to score on a flare by senior Sarah Vlahos.
The Blue Devils put the game away with three runs in the sixth inning. Mussatti had the big hit of the frame, a two-run double. McCoart also had an RBI double in the frame.
Mussatti and McCoart led the offense with two RBI each. Mussatti went 1-for-2 at the plate and scored three runs. McCoart was 2-for-3 with two doubles.
Springer and Vlahos also finished the game with two RBI.
"We had a nice day at the plate and Julie pitched great," said head coach Jeff Franquet. "She did a great job of working pitches around the zone and was able to get some swing and misses without walking a hitter."
The Blue Devils return to action tomorrow with a single game against Hampton.
