Softball Sweeps Wagner on Sunday
Springer Homers Twice, Messina Wins 17 and 18
Freshman Laura Messina won her 17th and 18th games of the season, and junior Nicole Springer homered twice, as the Central Connecticut softball team swept a doubleheader at home vs. Wagner on Sunday. The Blue Devils won the first game 8-0 in five innings, and won the second 2-1.
Messina is now 18-6 on the season, extending her school record for wins in a single season.
With the wins the Blue Devils are now 24-14 overall and 6-4 in Northeast Conference play. Wagner falls to 15-29 and 4-10 in the NEC.
In the first game, the Blue Devils took a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Ashley Black, sophomore Arielle Bruno and senior Rebecca Mussatti all singled to lead off the inning. Sophomore catcher Tessa Brown hit a grand slam, her third home run of the season, to clear the bases. Junior Nicole Springer went back-to-back with her sixth home run of the season to make it 5-0.
The lead reached 7-0 in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double from Mussatti.
Bruno drove in the eighth and final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. The game was stopped because of the eight-run mercy rule.
Messina won her 17th game of the season allowing just two hits and striking out six.
The Seahawks broke through for a 1-0 lead in third inning of game two. An RBI groundout gave Wagner the 1-0 lead.
Springer hit her second home run of the day, and seventh of the season, to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior Stephanie Chotkevys had an RBI triple to push the lead to 2-1 in the inning.
Messina allowed just the one run to win her 18th game of the season. She struck out six Wagner batters and allowed only four hits in the victory.
The Blue Devils return to action at home on Friday, Apr. 20 vs. LIU Brooklyn. They will also host Monmouth on Sunday, Apr. 22 in a NEC doubleheader.
