Bruno Homers, but Softball Falls
The Central Connecticut softball team dropped the final game of its series with #4 ASU.
Sophomore Arielle Bruno had a pair of hits, including her first home run of the season, but the Central Connecticut softball team fell to #4 Arizona State, 14-2, on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils (0-4) were swept by the defending NCAA Champion Sun Devils (14-2). Central served as the home team in the final game of the series.
Arizona State scored a single run in the first inning and then added three more in the third.
With ASU leading, 4-0, the Blue Devils scored their first run of the game on a solo home run by Bruno.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Sun Devil offense exploded for 10 runs in the top of the fifth. ASU scored three more runs against starting pitcher Laura Messina in the fifth. Messina got only one out in the inning. Junior Jordan Tingley relieved her and surrendered five runs without recording an out. Junior Nicole Springer recorded the final two outs of the inning, but still allowed two runs.
Despite falling behind, the Blue Devils did not go quietly in the bottom of the inning. Junior Macy Stefanski started the inning with a single. Senior Sarah Vlahos and Bruno each followed with singles to load the bases. Senior Rebecca Mussatti drew a walk to force in a run and pick up her first RBI of the season.
Messina picked up her second loss of the season. She allowed seven runs, four earned, over 4.2 innings.
Junior Kelsey Barlow also picked up a hit in the game.
Central returns to action on Saturday, March 3, against Hartford. The Blue Devils will host the Hawks for a doubleheader at the CCSU softball field.
