Men's T&F Competes at BU; Three CCSU Records Fall
Craig Hunt, Brian Biekert and Jordan Watkins each set a new CCSU record on Saturday.
The Central Connecticut men's track and field team completed competition at the Boston University Terrier Invitational on Saturday. Three Blue Devils broke CCSU records in the meet including senior Craig Hunt as well as juniors Brian Biekert and Jordan Watkins.
Hunt broke the CCSU 3,000m record with his time of 8:17.22 on Saturday morning. His time surpasses the previous record of 8:17.58, set by current assistant coach and former Central standout distance runner Sam Alexander in 2012. Hunt finished 22nd out of 103 runners and was followed by junior Andrew Hill in 38th. Hill crossed the line in 8:28.81, registering a new career-best time in the event.
In the one mile run, Biekert finished the race in 4:06.05 for 18th place out of 176 runners. His time shattered the previous Central record of 4:09.05 which Biekert set last season as a sophomore.
For the fourth-consecutive meet, Watkins surpassed the CCSU record in the 60m hurdles. He posted a time of 8.22 seconds, finishing fifth and shaving even more time off of his own record. Watkins began the season holding the record at 8.39 seconds.
In the 400m dash, junior Jamal Fruster finished 18th of 152 with his time of 48.60. Fruster was followed by freshman Zach Andrews (67th, 50.45) and junior Ryan Budd (70th, 50.58).
Fruster also performed well in the 200m dash, placing 42nd of 159 with his time of 22.54. Fruster was followed closely by freshman Kendall Walker (50th, 22.64). Also competing in the event were juniors Jamie Tobias (22.82) and Chris Savvidou (22.88). Both earned new career-best times in the race finishing 61st and 68th, respectively.
Sophomore Matt Walker also registered a new career-best time Saturday, finishing the 5,000m run in 14:57.86.
Also performing well on the track was freshman Jevon Elmore. Elmore, who is also on the Central football roster, sprinted the 60m dash and finished 14th of 106 with his time of 7.01 seconds. Kendall Walker and Savvidou followed in 7.16 and 7.29, respectively.
The Blue Devil 4x400m relay team, consisting of Budd, Fruster, Andrews and sophomore Malcolm Connor, placed 19th out of 44 squads (3:19.88).
In the field events, Tobias finished 14th in the high jump (1.90m) and was followed by Watkins who earned a career-best height of 1.85 meters.
Junior Michael Ficorilli competed in both the shot put (13.74m) and weight throw (13.86), earning 29th and 37th place overall. Freshman Jeremy Willis also competed in the weight throw. His toss of 10.68m registered a new career-best for Willis.
Sophomore John Sudol also bested his own previous career-high. He leapt for 12.88 meters in the triple jump event, good for 22nd place. He was trailed by freshman Kwency Crittenden in 23rd (12.85m).
The Blue Devils are set to return to action next Saturday, Feb. 1 when they travel to Kingston, RI for the URI "Coaches" Coed Invitational.
