Walker Wins 5K at New England Championships
Junior Matt Walker helped CCSU finish day one tied for seventh out of 25 teams at the New England Championships Friday.
The Central Connecticut men's track and field team finished its first day of the New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships (NEICAAAs) tied for seventh place out of 25 teams, due in large part to junior Matt Walker who took the gold in the 5,000m run.
Walker crossed the finish line in a career-best time of 14:29.09 to claim the win. Freshman Colin Sauter also competed in the race, coming in 12th with a personal-best time of 14:57.17.
Junior Jamal Fruster also performed well. He placed first in a field of 31 in the 400m dash preliminaries. He crossed the line in 48.11 and will compete in tomorrow's finals race.
In the 100m dash, freshman Jevon Elmore was the only other Blue Devil to qualify for tomorrow's finals. He finished the race in 11.03 seconds, good for seventh out of 31 competitors. He was followed in the race by sophomore Kendall Walker, who crossed in 11.04 for 10th.
Kendall Walker also competed in the 200m dash where he finished in 22.32 for 11th out of 29 sprinters.
In the 400m hurdles, junior Ryan Budd finished 11th of 29 in a time of 54.87 seconds.
The only Blue Devil to participate in throwing events Friday was freshman Jeremy Willis. He threw the javelin for 48.58 meters on the day.
The Blue Devils will return to action tomorrow for their second day of competition at the New England Championships in Westfield, MA.
