Biekert Two-Time NEC Track Athlete of the Week
Junior Brian Biekert takes home the honor for the second-consecutive week.
Junior Brian Biekert of the Central Connecticut men's track and field team was named NEC Track Athlete of the Week for the second-consecutive week on Tuesday for his record-breaking performance this past weekend.
Biekert, who shattered his own CCSU record in the 3,000m steeplechase this week, recorded a top-tier time for the second week in a row. One week after producing the 31st-best 1,500m time in NCAA Division I this season, Biekert jumped into the Top 20 national leaders in the steeplechase. The third-year Blue Devil crossed the line in 8:50.84 at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational, breaking his own CCSU program record of 8:59.11.
Biekert's time in the event is well below the qualifying standard for the IC4A Championships and is also better than the NEC Outdoor Championship meet record held by former Olympic Marathoner Brian Sell (SFU). Only 16 Division I runners have completed the steeplechase in less time this season.
Last week, the Groton, CT native broke the 50-year-old CCSU record in the 1,500m. He clocked a time of 3:45.28 to surpass the previous record of 3:46.40 set in 1964 by Jim Keefe.
