Men's Golf Tied for Fifth After Day One of NEC Championships
The Central Connecticut men's golf team finished day one of the 2011 Northeast Conference Golf Championships in a three way tie for fifth place. The Blue Devils posted a team score of 306 strokes tying with St. Francis (PA) and Long Island. Pacing the Central team was senior Justin Hughes who shot an opening round 75 on the 6,937 yard, par-72 Champions Gate Golf Course in Orlando, Florida.

Pacing the Central team was senior Justin Hughes who shot an opening round 75 on the 6,937 yard, par-72 Champions Gate Golf Course in Orlando, Florida.
Hughes 75 earned him a share of 11th place following the opening round. He made par or better on all but four of his 18 holes to finish at +3 on the day.
The Blue Devils had a pair of golfers at four-over after the first round. Junior Kevin Josephson and freshman Daniel Morgan each carded a 76 in the first round of action. Josephson posted a team best four birdies in his opening round. Morgan recorded the second most birdies with three. Both finished tied for 18th.
Rounding out the Blue Devils scorecard was senior Eric Hawerchuk and sophomore Dan Fanion. Hawerchuk finished the round tied for 32nd after posting a 79. He was much improved on the back nine as he carded a two-over 38 on the second half of the course. Fanion is tied for 48th after round one. He recovered from a difficult third hole, and closed his round with a birdie on 18 to card an 84.
Sacred Heart leads the team scoring after a 295 on day one. Josh Salah of Sacred Heart and C.G. Mercatoris of Robert Morris are currently tied for the individual honor after posting a first round 71.
Round two of the 54 hole championship will begin tomorrow at 8 am.
