CCSU Drops Tri Meet; Goldman Breaks CCSU Record
The Blue Devils came up short in a tri meet between CCSU, Bryant and UNH. CCSU returns to action when it hosts Vermont on Nov. 16.
The Central Connecticut swimming and diving team came up short in a tri meet against Bryant and the University of New Hampshire on Saturday at Jack Suydam Natatorium in New Britain, CT. The Blue Devils fell to Bryant by a score of 155-142 and also to UNH 214.50-84.50.
Three-time NEC Diver of the Week Jessica Goldman notched first from the 1-meter board and broke the CCSU record in the event with her score of 256.25, breaking Juliana Diplacido's 2005 score of 253.90.
Goldman topped the 1-meter field by nearly 30 points. CCSU's Kaitlyn Dwyer finished third with her score of 214.65 and was followed by freshman Kaitlyn Beaver who posted 203.75.
From the 3-meter board, Goldman was again the highest-placing Blue Devil, coming in third with a score of 215.85. She was followed by Dwyer (215.35, fourth), Beaver (208.25, fifth) and freshman Rayanne Muzzo (139.10, sixth).
CCSU posted 16 top-five swimming performances on the day including three from Christine Rasile. The freshman touched the wall in 1:54.96 in the 200 free for a new collegiate career-best time. Rasile also bested her own career record in the 100 free, posting a time of 53.15 for second place in the event. In addition to a gold and silver performance, Rasile also earned a bronze in the 50 free clocking a time of 25.11.
Rasile also helped the 200 freestyle relay team to a fourth-place finish with a time of 1:39.94. The team consisted of Rasile, freshman Sabree Thomas and seniors Erin Massey and Kellen Power.
Senior Kristina Gulia earned second place in the 100 yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:10.09. She was followed by sophomore Alaina Papiro in fourth exactly one minute later. Gulia also claimed third in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.88) and helped the 400 medley relay team to fourth, registering a time of 4:04.29.
Gulia was joined on the medley squad by Massey, Thomas and freshman Stephanie Czulewicz.
Thomas earned two individual top-five spots as she claimed fourth in the 100 butterfly, touching the wall in 1:00.43 and fifth in the 200 butterfly, clocking a collegiate career-best time of 2:12.56. She was followed closely in the 100 fly as teammate Power touched just behind in fifth with a time of 1:00.83.
Power also claimed fourth in the 200 freestyle with her season-best time of 1:58.94.
Other top-five swimming performances for Central included senior Kathryn Kiely, who placed third in the 1,000 yard freestyle (10:55.45) and fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:18.53). Kiely was followed by classmate Kasey Chilton in the 1,000 free. Chilton placed fifth, registering a time of 10:59.59. Czulewicz also placed fifth in the 100 yard backstroke, touching the wall in 1:01.65.
The Blue Devils return to action when they host Vermont and Merrimack on Saturday, Nov. 16. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
