Softball Completes Four Game Sweep Over Mount St. Mary's
The Blue Devils took both games on Sunday against the Mountaineers.
The Central Connecticut softball team completed a season sweep over Mount St. Mary's on Sunday. The team blasted three home runs in a 10-5 victory in game one, and Carli Backlund hit a walk-off home run in game two.
GAME ONE
Score: Central Connecticut 10, Mount St. Mary's 5

The Blue Devils got off to a rough start, going down 3-0 in the top of the first inning. Tori Bowles put the Mount on the board with a home run to left field.

Central quickly rebounded, loading up the bases for senior Meg Dugas who hit a sacrifice fly. Paige Stringer picked up right where she left off and blasted a three-run home run to center field.

Meg Dugas added three more runs to CCSU's lead after hitting a home run to left field in the bottom of the third. The hit scored Bri Walker and Kaitlin Paterson and gave Central a 7-3 lead.

Mount St. Mary's started to rally in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs with just one out. Anaya Hunte came in to pitch for Kaylee Whittaker and secured two clutch outs. Hunte pitched 1.2 innings and recorded her first career win.

Carli Buckland hit the team's third home run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning, giving CCSU a 10-5 lead. Kari Marks replaced Hunte on the mound and tossed two shutout innings to secure the win.

KEY MOMENTS

The Mount struck first in the top of the second, going up 1-0. Central responded in the bottom half of the third inning, after Rian Eigenmann singled up the middle scoring Carli Backlund. Eigenmann went a combined 4-6 with a RBI in the two games.

The Blue Devils gave up a run in the top of the seventh inning, falling behind 2-1. The lead would not last for the Mount.

Paige Stringer knocked a one out single for the Blue Devils. Kim Howard then struck out, leaving Carli Backlund at the plate with two outs. Backlund lifted one out and over the fence in right field, giving CCSU a 3-2 victory. The walk-off home run was the second homer of the day for Backlund.

Ashley Antonazzo pitched a complete game, giving up one earned run and striking out five batters. With the win, Central moved to 4-2 on the season and a perfect 4-0 in NEC play.

The Blue Devils head to the University of Connecticut for a matchup with the Huskies on Wednesday, Mar. 24. First pitch will be at 4:00 pm.
