Blue Devils Drop Opener, Tie Game Two in Home Opener vs. Stony Brook
Blue Devils back in action on Thursday at home vs. Yale
The Central Connecticut softball team dropped game one of a doubleheader vs. Stony Brook, 5-4, in the home opening doubleheader on Tuesday in New Britain. Game two was called due to darkness with the score tied 3-3 as the Blue Devils had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Blue Devils are now 6-13-1 overall on the season, while Stony Brook is 8-14-1.
In game one the Seawolves scored two runs in the first and two more in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead on the Blue Devils.
Central answered with a pair of two out runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. With two outs senior catcher Hannah Cooper singled and then scored on an RBI double from freshman Kaitlin Paterson. Paterson then scored on an RBI triple from sophomore Brittany McNulla, making it 4-2.
Stony Brook scored on more run in the sixth inning to make it 5-2, but the Blue Devils would not go quietly.
In the bottom of the seventh inning sophomore Brittany Camara led off with a double and then went to third on a wild pitch with one out in the inning. A double from freshman Kerri Dadalski scored Camara, making it 5-3. With two outs in the inning McNulla doubled to left center to drive in her second run of the game to make it 5-4. A strike out ended the game for the Blue Devils.
Sophomore pitcher Emily Sargent picked up the loss for CCSU pitching all seven innings and allowing 10 hits, three earned runs while striking out three.
In game two the Seawolves again took the early lead with a run in the second inning, and pushed the lead to 3-0 with one in the fifth and one more in the sixth.
The Blue Devils managed a pair of runs on one hit and cut the lead to 3-2 after six innings. Senior Katie Schmidt was hit by a pitch to start the inning and went to second when Camara walked. Paterson singled to load the bases and then McNulla reached on a throwing error that led to a pair of Blue Devils runs, cutting the lead to one.
The Blue Devils tied the game and had the bases loaded in the seventh inning before the game was called due to darkness. Sophomore Tori Constantin singled to lead off the inning and with one out Schmidt singled to put runners on first and second. Camara singled up the middle to score the tying run, making it 3-3. With one out and the bases loaded the game was halted due to darkness.
Freshman pitcher Alex Casanas pitched seven innings allowing three earned runs, nine hits and striking out one batter.
The Blue Devils return home on Thursday, hosting Yale on the CCSU Softball Field in a pair of games beginning at 2 p.m.
