Softball Drops a Pair of One Run Games on Saturday in Charleston
Blue Devils will play the host College of Charleston on Sunday
The Central Connecticut softball team dropped a pair of one run games at the College of Charleston Invitational on Saturday. The Blue Devils opened the day with a 3-2 loss to Miami (Ohio) and then dropped a 2-1 eight inning decision to Brown on Saturday night.
With the two losses the Blue Devils are now 6-11 overall on the season. They will play the host College of Charleston on Sunday.
In the first game the Blue Devils struck first in the top of the first inning on an RBI single from senior Eileen Purcell. She scored freshman Kaitlin Paterson who had doubled to lead off the inning.
Central pushed its lead to 2-0 in the third inning on an RBI single from sophomore Brittany McNulla. She scored senior Hannah Cooper who had reached on an error.
The lead was 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth inning when Miami (OH) scored three runs to take a 3-2 lead. The Blue Devils managed a hit in the seventh inning put could not bring across the tying run.
Freshman pitcher Alex Casanas dropped to 2-7 on the year pitching 5.1 innings and allowing three earned runs on eight hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts.
In the nightcap the Blue Devils trailed 1-0 heading into the seventh inning when sophomore Brittany Camara singled in a run to tie the game, scoring Purcell to make it 1-1. Purcell had a pair of hits in the game.
Sophomore pitcher Emily Sargent pitched seven innings for the Blue Devils allowing nine hits and just one earned run in the loss. She struck out six Brown batters on the night.
Brown's Sofia Venegas and Annie Scarangella each drove in a run for the Bears in the win.
