Softball Falls 7-0 in College of Charleston Tournament Finale
The CCSU Softball team fell 7-0 to the College of Charleston in its final game of the College of Charleston Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
The Central Connecticut softball team fell 7-0 in its finale of the College of Charleston Invitational on Sunday to the host team College of Charleston Cougars. The loss is the sixth straight for the Blue Devils who drop to 6-12 overall on the season with the setback. They will return to action next with their home opener on the CCSU Softball Field on Tuesday as they host Stony Brook in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
The Cougars, who improve to 19-10 on the season with the victory, scored four runs in the second, two in the third and one in the fifth for the 7-0 win in five and half innings. The game was shortened due to a due to a drop dead time so the Blue Devils could catch their flight back home to New Britain.
The College of Charleston pushed across four runs in the second inning and never looked back. Kelly Sinclair brought in the first run of the game on a RBI double to center field before Valerie Cassell followed two batters later with a bases loaded double to right-center. The double scored all three Cougar runners on base to give the College of Charleston an early 4-0 lead.
The Cougars added two more runs in the third inning on a RBI sacrifice fly from Jordin Jones and a RBI single by Taylor DuPree. They then tacked on one more run in the fifth inning off the bat of Chandler Frisbee for the 7-0 win before the time allotment expired after five and a half innings of play. Dupree doubled to left-center field to bring home the final run.
Freshman Alex Casanas started for the Blue Devils and took the loss pitching 2.0 innings, allowing four earned runs on three hits and five walks. She struck out one and is now 2-8 overall on the year in the circle.
Sophomore Emily Sargent came on in relief and worked the final 3.0 innings surrendering three earned runs on five hits and a walk. She struck out a pair.
The Blue Devils pounded out seven hits, but were unable to push any runs across in the loss. Freshman Kaitlin Paterson and sophomore Brittany McNulla led the way for CCSU as they each finished with two hits. They both went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles.
The CCSU softball team will return to action next as they host Stony Brook in a doubleheader on the CCSU Softball Field for their 2016 home opener on Tuesday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 2 p.m.
