Softball Falls at RMU, 4-0, 4-1
The Central Connecticut softball team dropped a doubleheader at Robert Morris on Sunday.
The Central Connecticut softball team dropped a doubleheader at Robert Morris on Sunday. The Blue Devils (25-19, 7-9 NEC) fell 4-0 in the opening game and 4-1 in game two. Senior Sarah Vlahos had a pair of hits on the day.
Game One
Central fell behind 4-0 as Robert Morris scored a run in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. The Colonials scored on a single in the third and then used home runs to plate their runs in the fourth and fifth.
Freshman Laura Messina falls to 19-10 on the season with the loss. She pitched five innings and allowed four runs on six hits. She struck out nine and did not walk a batter.
Junior Jordan Tingley pitched the bottom of the sixth inning. She allowed two hits, but did not let a run score.
The Blue Devils recorded just four hits against Robert Morris pitcher Nicole Sleith, who threw a complete game shutout.
Central's best scoring chance came in the sixth inning when freshman Ashley Black, sophomore Arielle Bruno and freshman Kat Malcolm strung together consecutive singles to load the bases with one out. Sleith was able to work out of the jam with a fly ball and a strike out.
Senior Sarah Vlahos had Central's fourth hit, a one out double in the seventh inning.
Game Two
The Blue Devils scored a run in the top of the first inning. Bruno led off the game with a single and with two outs junior Nicole Springer singled to center, scoring Bruno.
The Colonials opened the bottom half of the frame with a solo home run, quickly tying the game at 1-1.
Robert Morris scored its second run of the game on a Blue Devils throwing error in the third inning and the Colonials closed their scoring with a two-run home run in the fifth.
The Blue Devils were not able to score again after the first inning. Vlahos singled to lead off the second inning, but was stranded on the bases. Freshman Alyssa McCoart singled in the seventh inning, but Robert Morris worked out of the threat.
Messina took the loss in game two. She falls to 19-11 on the season. She threw six innings in game two, allowing four runs, three earned on eight hits. She struck out three and walked just one.
The Blue Devils return to action with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at St. Francis (PA). Game one is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch.
