Softball Tops Holy Cross at Home
Springer's three-run home run highlights six-run sixth
The Central Connecticut softball team used a six-run sixth inning break a 3-3 tie and top Holy Cross 9-3 on Thursday afternoon in New Britain. Junior Nicole Springer highlighted the inning with her third home run of the season, a three-run shot, to give Central the win. Central has now won 16 of its last 20 games and is 16-8 overall this season.
Holy Cross falls to 2-13 on the season with the loss.
The Blue Devils scored first in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Macy Stefanski walked with one out, and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. She scored on an RBI single from senior Sarah Vlahos.
Sophomore Arielle Bruno led off the third inning with a home run to left field, her second of the season, making it 2-0.
It went to 3-0 in the fourth inning. With runners on second and third, Vlahos drove in her second run of the game with a deep double off the left field fence. Stefanski also singled in the inning.
Holy Cross cut it to 3-1 on a solo home run from Abigail Lang. Camille Trainor tied it with a two-r home run later in the fifth.
The Blue Devils scored six unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 9-3 lead. The first run scored on a throwing error by the Crusaders, and then Bruno and sophomore Tessa Brown each drove in runs with singles. The three-run home run from Springer made it 9-3. It was her third home run of the season.
Freshman Laura Messina earned her 10th win of the season pitching a complete game and allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out 10 Holy Cross batters. The complete game was her 10th of the season.
The Blue Devils are back in action at Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday in their Northeast Conference opener beginning at 1 p.m.
