Softball Sweeps Norfolk State, 6-3 and 6-0
Blue Devils have won 13 of last 17 games
The Central Connecticut softball team swept a doubleheader on the road at Norfolk State on Tuesday afternoon, winning the first game 6-3, and taking the second 6-0. The win improves the Blue Devils to 14-7 overall on the season. They have now won 13 of their last 17 games, including all four over Norfolk State in the last two days.
In game one, sophomore Julie Marks picked up her second win of the season, pitching all seven innings and allowing six hits and two earned runs while striking out a pair. She is now 2-1 on the season.
Sophomore Arielle Bruno had two hits and a pair of runs batted in. Central scored four runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead, and would never trail.
Junior Kelsey Barlow added two hits, including a double, and an RBI, while classmate Macy Stefanski also had two hits and a run batted in.
in the second game it was freshman pitcher Laura Messina who posted her eighth win and third shutout of the season to lead the Blue Devils. Messina allowed only three hits and struck out five, she faced only 26 batters in the seven inning win.
Messina allowed hits to the first two batters of the game for Norfolk State, and then allowed just one hit the rest of the way. The third and final hit came in the second inning. Messina faced just 17 batters the rest of the way and did not allow a hit.
Central scored two in the third, one in the fifth and two more in the sixth to open the 5-0 lead. They added one in the seventh to make it 6-0.
The top of the order did most of the damage for the Blue Devils. Bruno, senior Rebecca Mussati and sophomore Tessa Brown went a combined 7-for-11 with four runs scored and four runs batted in. Mussati and Brown each had two RBI. Junior Nicole Springer and senior Sarah Vlahos each drove in a run in the victory.
The Blue Devils continue their trip south on Wednesday playing a pair of games at Coppin State. They will return home on Thursday to host Holy Cross in a single game at 4 p.m.
