Biekert 1st at UAlbany; Watkins Breaks 60m H Record
Junior Brian Biekert qualified for both the NEICAAA and IC4A/ECAC Championships in the one mile run on Friday with his time of 4:11.91.
The Central Connecticut men's track and field team competed at the University of Albany Great Dane Classic on Friday, finishing 15th overall. Junior Brian Biekert led Central with his victory in the one mile race earning 10 team points. His time of 4:11.91 qualifies him for this season's NEICAAA and IC4A/ECAC Championships.
Junior Jordan Watkins also displayed an impressive performance Friday. For the second-consecutive meet, Watkins broke the CCSU 60m hurdle record. He now owns the record with a time of 8.24 and has qualified for the NEICAAA and IC4A/ECAC Championships.
Junior Jamal Fruster also qualified for the NEICAAA Championships with his solid sprint in the 400m dash. Fruster crossed the finish line in 49.24 seconds for 11th place out of 51 runners.
The final Blue Devil to qualify for NEICAAA competition Friday was freshman Kendall Walker. He finished 32nd of 65 sprinters in the 200m dash with his time of 22.59. Walker also finished first in his heat.
Junior Joey Farrington also finished first in his heat (14th overall) with his time of 1:58.77 in the 800m run.
Other notable track performances include freshman Derek French who placed ninth in the 5,000m run (16:02.47), sophomore Malcolm Connor who finished 15th in the 500m dash (1:06.52) and sophomore Matt Walker who crossed the 3,000m finish line in 8:51.61 for 16th place overall.
In the field events, junior Jamie Tobias led the Blue Devils finishing 12th overall out of 21 in the high jump registering a height of 1.89m.
In the triple jump, freshman Garrett Shaw finished 13th (12.82m) and was followed by freshman Kwency Crittenden in 14th (12.40m).
The Blue Devils are set to return to the track on Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Boston University Terrier Invitational.
